MODULE 1
EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK: LESSONS FROM AN ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE
A successful escape from one of Escape Manor’s fun and challenging escape rooms requires problem-solving, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. These are also essential skills for today’s workforce.
In our unique and impactful Effective Teamwork workshop, participants will complete an exciting escape room activity, then have the opportunity to synthesize the information and lessons learned and relate them to their ongoing teamwork in the workplace.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- Interpersonal and organizational communication
- Effective collaboration
- Problem-solving
- Leadership
MODULE 2
THE BEHAVIOURS OF AN EXCEPTIONAL EMPLOYEE
What does it take to be an exceptional employee? While this answer will vary depending on the job, organization and industry, there is a set of common behaviours and attitudes that all exceptional employees demonstrate.
In this module, participants will learn about the fundamental building blocks to becoming an exceptional employee. They will also have the chance to think through some workplace scenarios and identify the behaviours of an exceptional employee in each case.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- Curiosity
- Proactive mindset
- Asking for and integrating feedback
- Positive attitude and engagement
MODULE 3
EMAIL MANAGEMENT
Many of us have been managing our email inbox for so long that we’ve forgotten that it is a skill we acquired over time. Today’s youth have been overloaded with incoming information across multiple platforms for their entire lives – email being the least interesting and relevant, until now.
In this module, participants will learn how to use email professionally to help them communicate more efficiently and effectively at work.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- Email filing/archiving
- Identifying appropriate email recipients
- Response time and prioritization
- Professional standards (greetings, language, attention to detail)
MODULE 4
TIME MANAGEMENT: USEFUL TOOLS AND HABITS
While many post-secondary graduates have learned to effectively manage their academic schedule, time management in a school setting is different than in the workplace. Fewer stakeholders, greater clarity of timelines and desired outcomes, and distinct course curriculum are just a few ways that most young people’s academic experience varies from the workplace.
In this module, participants will get familiar with tools and concepts that can help them reduce feelings of overwhelm and disorganization, while enabling them to be more productive.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- Effectively using an electronic calendar and task manager
- Time chunking and eliminating distractions
- Note-taking in the workplace
MODULE 5
WRITING IN THE WORKPLACE
The way we write in the workplace sends important signals to our colleagues and clients about our competence, reliability and professionalism. Co-op students, interns and recent graduates have rarely been offered training or coaching on how to write effectively in a professional environment.
In this module, participants will learn about the differences between academic and workplace communications as well as some key indicators that will show employers and clients that they are competent and trustworthy.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- Professional vs. academic writing
- Courteous communication (greetings and gratitude)
- Persuasive writing
MODULE 6
GIVING AND RECEIVING FEEDBACK
Feedback is necessary for us to learn, grow and develop our skills. While necessary, it is one of the most feared and avoided topics in the workplace. This is especially true for today’s youth, who have had far fewer opportunities to learn the skills and confidence to engage in feedback situations effectively.
In this module, participants will learn about the three basic types of feedback – appreciation, coaching and evaluation – as well as the behaviours and attitudes that will help them give and receive it effectively.
Sub-themes and discussions include:
- What successful feedback looks like
- Why feedback is important
- How to receive feedback effectively
- How to deliver feedback effectively
