Difficult conversations happen in every workplace. Research shows that the way teams engage in them is a predictor of their performance. High-performing teams engage in difficult conversations from a place of curiosity, compassion and courage. The ability to do this effectively is an important and refined skill that most people struggle to apply with consistent success.

In this course, you will explore various types of difficult conversations, learn about the reasons why they are so challenging, and develop the skills and strategies you need to handle them more effectively.

DAY 1: BUILD A FOUNDATION OF TRUST

Lesson 1: The 3 Cs of High-Trust Teams

Explore what it means to share deep interpersonal trust with another person, and understand how you can foster more trusting relationships that enable effective conversations.

Lesson 2: Psychological Safety

Understand the importance and power of fostering a psychologically safe work environment and learn about the conditions that you can create to enhance the psychological safety among your team.

Lesson 3: Understanding and Adapting Your Communication Style

Learn how your personal values shape your thoughts and communication style, and understand how to adapt your style to communicate more effectively with others in challenging situations.

 

DAY 2: APPROACH LIKE A COACH

Lesson 4: Key Coaching Skills

Understand the essentials of effective coaching and develop the skills and knowledge needed to engage in conversations with curiosity and compassion.

Lesson 5: Applying the Skills: Micro-Coaching

Put your skills to work! Apply the skills and knowledge you’ve gained so far by engaging in micro-coaching in small groups to get hands-on practice. 

DAY 3: PLAN AND ADAPT

Lesson 6: Planning – How To Prepare For The Conversation

Explore the best practices around how to prepare for a difficult conversation and proactively identify barriers or challenges that might affect the interaction.

Lesson 7: Reacting: What To Do When You Can’t Plan

Learn how to react and respond to a difficult conversation in-the-moment to maintain mutual respect and compassion. 

Lesson 8: Adapting: Reassessing the Conversation

Learn about the importance of adapting to others’ needs throughout a difficult conversation and how to do it effectively to optimize outcomes for all parties.  

Lesson 9: Giving and Receiving Effective Feedback

Understand the importance of giving clear and relevant feedback and learn how to deliver and receive feedback (both positive and constructive) effectively.

Lesson 10: Case Studies – Having Productive Disagreements

Explore and learn from case studies on difficult conversations relating to performance issues, unethical behaviour, and power differentials.
